Auto Insurance

Michigan is a no-fault auto insurance state, and since a major 2019 reform, drivers have had a real choice in how much medical coverage — called Personal Injury Protection, or PIP — they carry. That choice can change your monthly premium significantly, but it also changes how protected you are if you're ever in a serious accident. Getting it right isn't just about finding the cheapest quote; it's about understanding what you're actually choosing.

Understanding Your Michigan PIP Options

Michigan drivers can currently choose from six PIP coverage levels:

• Unlimited — no cap on medical expenses related to an accident

• $500,000 in coverage

• $250,000 in coverage

• $250,000 with an exclusion, for drivers with other qualifying health coverage

• $50,000, available to Medicaid enrollees

• PIP opt-out, available to Medicare Part A & B holders

Choosing a lower tier can meaningfully lower your premium — but if you're ever in a serious accident, a low PIP tier can leave you responsible for significant out-of-pocket medical costs. This is exactly the kind of decision where talking to a local agent, instead of clicking through an online form, makes a real difference.

Minimum Coverage Isn't Always the Right Coverage

Michigan requires drivers to carry at least 20/40/10 liability coverage ($20,000 bodily injury per person, $40,000 per accident, $10,000 property damage), along with Property Protection Insurance and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage at matching limits. These are legal minimums, not necessarily adequate protection — especially if an accident involves a newer vehicle or a serious injury.

Why Work With a Local Independent Agent

Torley Insurance Group works with multiple carriers — including Nationwide and Liberty Mutual, along with specialty options like Hagerty for classic and collector vehicles — so we can match your driving history, budget, and risk tolerance to the right PIP tier and carrier, rather than offering a single company's default package.
